纪录片《达赖喇嘛》记述了十四世达赖喇嘛丹增嘉措如何从一个青海省农家的儿子成为西藏政教合一的封建农奴制度的领袖人物，以及他在1954年至1956年与中央政府保持亲密合作关系后，又是如何走上分裂祖国的道路。《达赖喇嘛》反映了本世纪30年代至50年代中国西藏所发生的重大历史事件；系统地介绍了藏传佛教达赖喇嘛封号与灵童转世制度的由来及关于这一制度的历史定制与宗教仪轨所包含的内容。《达赖喇嘛》片中引用的多数资料是首次披露，具有极高的文献价值。

Those unfamiliar with the Dalai Lama will be pleasantly caught off guard by this exiled Tibetan leader’s frequent laughter and ability to poke fun. His humor makes for agreeable interludes during the serious business of examining the effects of the 1950 Chinese invasion and subsequent domination of his country. Aided by several brothers and his sister, he recounts his boyhood training as the reincarnated Dalai Lama and his sudden status as spiritual and national leader at age 16. The Nobel Peace Prize winner details the desecration of Tibet and its temples, but the point is driven home by tourists and former Tibetan prisoners. Their tales of persecution range from mildly amusing mistaken identity to the horror of electrocution torture and watching relatives shot to death.
