Lunar New Year Greetings from the Prime Minister

I am delighted to extend my warmest wishes to Chinese Canadians celebrating the Lunar New Year.

More than a billion people around the world mark the Lunar New Year. Here at home, our vibrant Chinese community will welcome the Year of the Tiger with festivities across the country. It is a time of great expectations and an occasion to recognize the significant contributions of Chinese Canadians.

Last December, I was honoured to lead an official Canadian delegation to China.

During my visit, I gained a deeper appreciation for the rich heritage shared by the more than one million Canadians of Chinese descent, who provide a vital link between our countries. This year, we will have an opportunity to strengthen these bonds as we mark the 40th anniversary of Canada-China diplomatic relations.

This is just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting year. As the Lunar New Year begins, the Olympic spirit that shone brightly in Beijing will continue to glow in Vancouver-Whistler as we host the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. I know Canada’s Chinese community will applaud the world’s best winter athletes as you observe the start of a momentous year and a memorable Olympic experience.

On behalf of the Government of Canada, Laureen and I wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

Gung hei fat choi.

The Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper, P.C., M.P.

Prime Minister of Canada
