Border officials are preparing to deport single mother Hong Zhang to China with her 13-month-old daughter.

Zhang, 39, met with officials yesterday at the Canada Border Services Agency removal unit in Malton who will arrange the paperwork for her Canadian-born daughter, Sherry, to travel to China, said Roy Kellogg, her immigration consultant.

No date has been set for Zhang’s removal.

The Chinese consulate turned down Zhang’s request Tuesday for a visitor’s visa for Sherry because the child would not be returning to Canada.

“They are adamant that this lady is going,” Kellogg said after yesterday’s meeting with border officials.

Zhang, who came to Canada in 1997, was ordered out of Canada last June, but has applied to immigration officials to stay on humanitarian and compassionate grounds. There has been no decision on the application and it could be two years before one is rendered, Kellogg said.

“Please assign someone to look at her humanitarian, compassion application,” Kellogg said. “That’s all we’re asking. If there’s not an unusual, an undeserved or disproportionate hardship, then refuse her.”

Sherry faces discrimination in China where laws ban children out of wedlock. She will be denied health care, schooling and Chinese citizenship. Zhang also faces a fine of $100,000. Zhang is not worried about her own fate if she’s deported. She only fears for Sherry.

“I want to see Sherry happy and healthy and grow up.”
