Greetings from the Prime Minister
I am delighted to extend my best wishes to the Chinese community in Canada on the occasion of the Chinese New Year.
Across the country, Canadians of Chinese descent are gathering to honour tradition by ushering in the Year of the Ox. This celebration is a wonderful opportunity to both mark time-honoured customs and share these proud commemorations with fellow Canadians. As a young nation, Canada draws tremendous strength from the rich history that shapes our vibrant cultural landscape.
As you mark the beginning of the Year of the Ox, I hope that you will celebrate the fortitude and hard work that characterize the Canadian Chinese community and look forward with enthusiasm to building on your successes in the upcoming year. I am certain that today’s joyous festivities will set the tone for a prosperous, healthy, and happy year ahead.
On behalf of the Government of Canada and my wife Laureen, I wish you a very Happy New Year.
Sincerely,
The Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper, P.C., M.P.
Prime Minister of Canada

中国的十二生肖中,2009年是代表勤奋工作而稳健、富足的牛年。我相信加拿大人在面临经济环境挑战下,将展现出这些价值观,通过共同努力度过难关。

Statement from Michael Ignatieff, Leader of the Official Opposition, on the Celebration of Chinese New Year
Xin Nian Hao!
On January 26, Chinese Canadians from across the country will gather together to mark one of the most important celebrations in the Chinese calendar: the New Year.
This is a special time, when family and friends gather together and participate in feasts, festivals and parades, to celebrate the end of winter and the beginning of spring.
According to the Chinese zodiac, 2009 is the year of the ox, symbolizing stability and prosperity through hard work. I am certain that these are values all Canadians will exemplify as we work together to move past these challenging economic times.
On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our parliamentary caucus, I wish health, happiness and prosperity to everyone celebrating the Chinese New Year.
Gung Hei Fat Choi!
