News Release: Toronto South Detention Centre Opens its Doors

New Correctional Facility is State-of-the-art Investment in Community Safety
Built on the site of the former Mimico Correctional Centre, which has a correctional history dating back to 1887, the TSDC replaces the Toronto Jail and the Toronto West Detention Centre.
The TSDC helps meet Ontario’s inmate capacity needs and offers a number of specialized programs that will reduce re-offense rates while ensuring public and staff safety, including a mental health assessment unit, special needs unit and an Aboriginal program area.
Opening the TSDC is part of the government’s plan to invest in people, build modern infrastructure and support a dynamic and innovative business climate.
QUICK FACTS
The Toronto Intermittent Centre (TIC), a 320-bed facility housing inmates serving weekend intermittent sentences opened at the TSDC site in late 2011.
The TSDC features 1,650 beds for remanded and sentenced inmates with both direct and indirect supervision units.
The building was designed and built to meet LEED Silver certification.
