Nanking horror relived in filmDoc exposes Japanese atrocity in China
By LIZ BRAUN, SUN MEDIA
The world premiere of an important new film takes place Monday night here in Toronto.
Iris Chang:The Rape of Nanking is a documentary about the young woman whose bestselling book exposed a horrendous chapter in human history. Chang wrote The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II, and this film tells the story of her life and her struggle to bring the facts to light.
Her determination uncovered in graphic detail the Nanking Massacre, an almost forgotten war incident during which almost 300,000 Chinese women, children and soldiers were raped, tortured and murdered by the invading Japanese forces. The death toll in Nanking exceeded Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined.
Chang’s book was published in 1997. It was the first detailed English-language account of the atrocities.
Iris Chang: The Rape Of Nanking brings the audience along with Chang on her passionate pursuit of the truth. The film, which stars Olivia Cheng, combines dramatic re-enactment with archival footage and interviews with Chang’s family and friends.
Actress Olivia Cheng and the parents of the late Iris Chang will attend this world premiere screening of Iris Chang: The Rape Of Nanking, Monday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. at the Bloor Cinema, 506 Bloor St. W. Tickets $12 at the box office.
