Toronto police are concerned for the safety of three teenage exchange students from China after they went missing Tuesday during an ESL summer camp excursion in the Beaches.

Zhiyong Chen, 17, Qian Hu, 15, and Kangjuun Fu, 13, were last seen at Woodbine Beach in the area of Woodbine Ave. and Lake Shore Blvd. E. yesterday at around 1:30 p.m.

The students, originally from the Changsha City in Hunan Province, were at the beach with other students and instructors in their ESL exchange program, a four-week program run by the Toronto District School Board to help foreign students learn English.

When the three students didn’t return to the group, the teacher notified police.

Police say that the students arrived in Canada only a week ago and speak Mandarin with limited knowledge of English.

“We have three young students who don’t speak English, never been to Canada or Toronto before, and hopefully they all stay together and take care of each other,” said Const. Wendy Drummond.

“Of course we’re concerned.”

Police say that the family of the students in China have been contacted.

“Our initial investigation suggests that this was a planned event, the three youth planned to depart from the group and meet up with someone. The problem is we don’t know who they are with, who they are, and they have limited language skills and are fairly young,” said Det. Debra Houston.

A spokesperson for the Toronto District School Board said that they are aware of the situation and are working with police, but couldn’t comment further at this time.

“We don’t want to compromise the investigation, we just want to make sure the students come back safe,” said Alana Russell from the TDSB.

Both Zhiyong Chen, 17, and Kangjun Fu, 13, are described as male, 5-foot-7, 110 lbs, thin build with short black hair. They were both last seen wearing a white cotton t-shirt. Fu was last seen wearing blue denim pants.

Qian Hu, 15, is described as female, 100 lbs, short black hair, with a thin build.

Police are urging that anyone who was in the Woodbine beach area Tuesday afternoon or who may have seen the students to contact 55 Division at 416-808-5500, or to leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 1-888-222-TIPS.
