Business links strong for Chinese immigrants to Canada<\/strong> May 16, 2007<\/p>\n For every 1,000 newcomers from China in recent years, Canada’s trade with that country has increased by roughly $700-million, a University of Toronto study says.<\/p>\n Chinese-Canadian entrepreneurs are credited with boosting trade ties substantially between the two countries between 1995 and 2004.<\/p>\n Trade with China more than tripled to $30-billion in 2005 from a decade earlier. The world’s most populous country has been Canada’s second-largest national trading partner since 2003.<\/p>\n “Chinese transnational entrepreneurship is rapidly growing with the influx of immigrants and China’s rise in the global economy,” said the study’s authors, sociologists Wenhong Chen and Barry Wellman.<\/p>\n Almost three-quarters of Chinese-Canadian firms involved in international businesses have helped either non-Chinese-Canadian firms to do business in China, or Chinese firms to do business in Canada, the report said.<\/p>\n The types of Chinese-Canadian businesses have shifted in recent decades. Until the early eighties, grocery stores and small businesses such as laundries and restaurants “had dominated the Chinese ethnic economy in Canada,” the report said.<\/p>\n Today, almost half of Chinese-Canadian entrepreneurs have business links with their home country and run businesses built on trading goods, services, technology, knowledge and culture between Canada and China.
