York University student found dead in her room after an altercation partly viewed via webcam.<\/p>\n A stern Toronto police Det. Frank Skubic warned the media not to concentrate on the one \u201cperson of interest\u201d whose picture has circulated and not to call that person a suspect.<\/p>\n \u201cThere has been misinformation that this man is in fact the intruder seen by the online witness,\u201d said Skubic. \u201cI do not, I repeat, I do not confirm this is a fact.<\/p>\n \u201cWe interviewed this person very early on and are working toward excluding him.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re looking at a number of people who fall into that category,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n The death of 23-year-old Qian Liu, a \u201chard-working student\u201d with \u201ca number of friends in Canada,\u201d is being investigated as a homicide, said Skubic, even though preliminary exams have failed to determine the cause of death.<\/p>\n Next-stage toxicology tests will take a few weeks for results.<\/p>\n Police have interviewed a boyfriend in China whom Liu was speaking to around 1 a.m. Friday when she let someone into her room at 27 Aldwinckle Heights near the university campus.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re not going to speculate if she knew this person,\u201d he said. \u201cShe did open the door but there is no peephole.\u201d<\/p>\n They released photographs of Liu\u2019s missing IBM ThinkPad laptop, her missing external webcam device used to create the live-streaming photo link between Liu and her friend in China and her missing Nokia smartphone.<\/p>\n Liu arrived in Toronto last September to study at York and moved to Aldwinckle Heights in January from Haynes Ave. a few blocks away. Police also examined the earlier address for evidence.<\/p>\n Skubic said police had no firm evidence that Liu had been stalked by someone who shared a house with her, as a friend had posted in a Chinese-language online chat room.<\/p>\n \u201cThe suspect was chasing after her, but she refused, then he started stalking her by texting her all the time,\u201d the friend wrote.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve got no information that she was stalked in the criminal sense,\u201d Skubic said. As with a lot of people, \u201cshe was asked to go out on dates. That kind of behaviour doesn\u2019t constitute criminal stalking.\u201d<\/p>\n Police said earlier they are still searching for a white male, 20 to 30 years old, 6-feet tall with a muscular build and medium length brown hair. His hair was messy at the front and well groomed at the back. He was wearing a blue crew neck T-shirt.<\/p>\n After Liu\u2019s boyfriend saw the webcam shut down, he started sending out distress calls and emails. She answered and was met by a man, who asked to use her cellphone.<\/p>\n A struggle ensued and police say part of it was witnessed by the friend in Beijing. After a few minutes the man closed the laptop.<\/p>\n On Tuesday Det. Sgt. She was talking early Friday morning to a male friend from home when a man allegedly knocked on her door, asking to use her phone, police said in a news release.<\/p>\n The online witness said he saw Liu and the unknown man struggle for a time before the attacker turned off her laptop, the news release said.<\/p>\n The friend in China then started a desperate bid to find out what happened, CNN-affiliate CTV reported.<\/p>\n Ten hours later, police arrived at the basement apartment to find Liu’s body, naked from the waist down. Her laptop was missing.<\/p>\n “It was obvious that she had been dead for some period of time,” Detective Sgt. Frank Skubic said in the news release.<\/p>\n The cause of the death is yet to be determined, the news release said. There were no obvious signs of sexual assault or severe physical trauma, and police are awaiting toxicology reports, it said.<\/p>\n Police are unsure whether Liu, an exchange student at York University, knew the man.
