Ice-free CN Tower possible, company says

Toronto – A U.S. company says it has developed a solution to halt the fears of ice chunks falling from the CN Tower.<\/p>\n

Ice Engineering says it can fix the problem which has closed Toronto’s Gardiner Expressway for the past two days. It involves wrapping the sides of the tower in a special foil, like a baked potato. Once wrapped in foil, a flick of the switch is all that is needed to keep the tower ice-free.<\/p>\n

The foil uses electric pulses to melt snow and ice. Still, the device would take a month to install, so it would only help next winter.<\/p>\n

Although closing Gardiner was a definite inconvenience for drivers, some wondered if the problem was one worth fixing anyway.<\/p>\n

Drivers said that the ice is something that the ice storm brought, and it will go away eventually.<\/p>\n

Police have re-opened the roads around the CN Tower, saying that the lack of wind has reduced the chances of ice falling onto the highway.<\/p>\n

“The winds aren’t what they were yesterday when they were carrying the ice a lot farther from the tower,” Sgt. Josi Fovic said.<\/p>\n
