    Avianna Chao set for Olympics
    Posted: Jul 20, 2007

Toronto’s Avianna Chao more or less fell into Olympic pistol shooting, but she swiftly learned she had a gift for it and that, in turn, has translated into an extraordinary present for her mother.
Chao, 32, won the women’s 10-metre air pistol event at the Pan American Games on Monday, which also qualified her for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. So, mother and daughter will be able to journey for a special visit back to the country of their birth, which they left separately, years ago, owing to circumstance.

“This is so very exciting – my heart was jumping out of my body!” Chao said after her victory. “I tried to stay calm with some deep breathing, and just tried to shoot the best that I could.

“I’m just thrilled to win, it’s a dream come true.”

Next year, her realized dream will pay homage to that of her mother at the Summer Olympics in Beijing.

When the poet, anthologist and literary critic Lien Chao emigrated from China to Canada in 1984 to study Canadian literature, she had evident talent, a dream to complete higher education, absolutely no funding from the government of China and $100 in her pocket.

Oh, and an 11-year-old daughter named Avianna she had to leave behind with relatives until she got settled, culturally and financially. Two years later, Avianna followed her mom, then a student at York University, where Lien completed her MA and PhD in literature. Mother and daughter lived for 10 years with Virginia Rock, a member of the York University faculty, while the mother completed her education.

Lien’s signature work, an autobiography, is titled Maples and the Stream: a narrative poem in which she writes of the grim, grey, miserable life in China, contrasted with realization of her dreams in Canada, which she symbolizes with references to the “blazing red” of Canada’s maples.

No surprise, really, that Avianna lists her mother as her hero in the Pan Am team media guide. Fitting, too, that daughter Avianna will wear the blazing red maple leaf on her uniform in competition. But that was hardly planned.

Avianna certainly didn’t grow up with any athletic dreams, she said Monday. She was introduced to shooting by her partner, Patrick Haynes, who was trying out for the Canadian men’s team. Hanging out at the range was a way to offer moral and emotional support. And, at the time, it literally gave her something to do.

“In our home, education very much came first,” said Avianna. “But when I graduated (in 2001) with a degree in computer engineering, the job market wasn’t strong and I couldn’t find a job.

“I had time on my hands, so I decided to give shooting a try.”

She found out she was good at it and, over time, Haynes’ role evolved into being her coach.

“What can I say?” said Chao. “He’s always been a great teacher.

“From the beginning I learned classic, Olympic shooting. I learned self-discipline, focus. And I guess I had a certain amount of physical ability.”

And the sport appealed to her sensibility, as well.

“The interesting thing about shooting is that it’s the only Olympic sport in which you’re trying to be as still as possible,” Chao said. “In all the other sports, you’re trying to move fast, or run far, or lift something heavier, or jump higher.

“Not in shooting. It’s fascinating and a real challenge. It’s very Zen, very Buddhist, very calming. It’s almost like meditation. It’s also a very technical sport. So it’s an intellectual challenge to try to figure it out.”

Chao figured it out on Monday, posting a final result of 468.9 points in the target-shooting competition to beat out Luisa Maida of El Salvador, who had 467.9 and Kirenia Bello Trujillo of Cuba, who finished with 467.5.

“I just tried to take each competition as it comes, putting no expectation on it, but not underestimating myself, either,” said Chao, who was the bronze medallist in the 25-metre pairs pistol event at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. She is also three-time national women’s champion (2003-’05) in that event.

Her Pan Am Games competition now over, Chao will “hang around” until July 23, she said, and support her teammates before heading back to Canada to prepare for the Canadian championships in Prince Albert, Sask.

The preparations are already underway for the reunion voyage to China next summer.

“My mom was already making plans about going back for the Olympics, but wasn’t sure if she could go ahead with them,” Chao said. “Now she can.”
