Positive Increase in Number of Travellers From China to Canada

OTTAWA, December 16, 2009 — The Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State (Small Business and Tourism) applauded the positive increase of Chinese travellers to Canada.

Today, the International Travel Survey for October 2009 reported that travel from China has increased by over 3% compared to October 2008.

“The strength of the Chinese market is very positive news for Canada’s tourism industry. And, with the newly granted Approved Destination Status (ADS), even more Chinese visitors will have an opportunity to travel to our great country to experience and enjoy all that Canada has to offer.”

“Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, our government has provided $40 million to the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC) for greater domestic and international marketing. With ADS, the CTC will be able to greatly increase the scale of their promotion and marketing activities in China.

Our government is working hard to strengthen ties with China that will help build upon our mutual successes. China is our third largest export market and our second largest trade partner. Canada’s diversity is strengthened by over one million Canadians of Chinese origin and China is Canada’s number one source of new citizens.
